TSK launches the largest photovoltaic plant in Jordan

26 April, 2018

The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources of Jordan (MEMR) and the Government of Abu Dhabi that has financed the project through the emirate’s Development Fund have unveiled the largest photovoltaic plant to date in the country.

The plant is located in the town of Quweira, located a few kilometers from and halfway between two of the most important UNESCO World Heritage Sites – the city of Petra and the desert of Wadi Rum – and occupies an area of 2 million square meters equivalent to 288 football fields, supplying 52,000 homes and avoiding the emission of 170,000 tons of CO2.
With a power of 120 MWp, it will generate an annual output of more than 225 Gigawatt-hours, which will be distributed through the 132/400 kV network owned by the National Electricity Company (NEPCO).

The project was designed with a mixed configuration incorporating double support technology: fixed and with single axis tracking in equal proportions, which will achieve the most advantageous yields and efficiencies derived from both technologies.

TSK carried out the project as leader of a Joint Venture with the company Enviromena Power Systems of Abu Dhabi and included the development of detailed engineering, equipment supply, integral construction and commercial start-up of the plant, for which an execution period of 16 months had been agreed. The value of the contract exceeds 120 million euros.
The agreement also includes the contract for the operation and integral maintenance of the plant during the warranty period of the same, which can be extended up to a total of 25 years of useful life.

More than 200 local workers participated in the construction and TSK contributed to the rehabilitation of several schools in the Quweira region attended by more than 1,600 children.
With this project TSK consolidates its presence in Jordan, a country where its subsidiary PHB Weserhütte is also currently carrying out another important project in the industrial terminal of the port of Aqaba, and at the same time reasserts the Company’s position as a world leader in the sector of renewable energies, and in particular in the Middle East region. It is important to highlight that during the year 2017 TSK was awarded several of the most important solar projects in the world, totaling more than 1,000 MW.

The inauguration was attended among others by the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources of Jordan, with the presence of the Ambassador of Spain in Jordan.
