The REPAPEL project ends, in which the consortium in which TSK participates achieves a milestone for the sustainability and circularity of the paper industry.

5 March, 2024

The project revolutionizes the industry by reducing waste and reusing it as valuable resources for multiple sectors.

REPAPEL, through industrial research and experimental development, seeks technological and management solutions for a novel high added value valorization of waste and by-products from pulp and paper production, integrating the entire value chain: pulp and paper manufacturers, engineering companies, waste treatment companies and processing industries in the chemical and construction sectors that develop technologies that allow obtaining recoverable and efficient by-products for different industrial applications.

Specifically, TSK’s work in collaboration with TECNALIA has focused on the search, testing and validation of carbonation processes for the ashes produced in biomass electricity generation plants, frequently used in the paper industry.

As a result, the technical feasibility of the use of these ashes from the combustion in biomass plants as a substitute for cement in concrete used in construction has been concluded.

The consortium is made up of pulp manufacturers: Smurfit Kappa Nervión and Zubialde; engineering companies: Ondoan, TSK and Ekotek; waste treatment company: SADER; asphalt companies: Campezo and Asfaltia; concrete sector companies: P. Etxeberria; chemical sector companies: Feralco and Biosyncaucho; and has the collaboration of the Basque Science and Technology and Innovation Network: Tecnalia Research & Innovation and CEIT; as well as the support of the Basque Paper Cluster and Aclima, Basque Environment Cluster. The project is co-financed by the Basque Government through HAZITEK grants and the European Union through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
