HyDeal España and TSK announce partnerships for the largest green hydrogen hub in Europe, and one of the largest in the world

31 May, 2022

HyDeal España, the first industrial implementation of the HyDeal Ambition platform, has selected TSK to support technically the project as Owner’s Engineer.

TSK is holding a key role in this initial phase of the project, acting as technical partner of the developing joint venture, and in close collaboration for the best technical choice, for the optimization of the renewable energy generation plants, the green hydrogen storage and transport, and the technical evaluation of the different alternatives that Hydeal Ambition is considering for this ambitious project.

Announced in February 2022, HyDeal España is an industrial joint venture formed by ArcelorMittal, Enagás, Grupo Fertiberia and DH2 Energy, created to deliver competitive renewable hydrogen to an industrial complex in Asturias. Green hydrogen will be produced thanks to the electricity supplied by several solar plants based in northern Spain.

The total installed capacity is expected to reach 9.5 GW of solar power and 7.4 GW of electrolyzers. Production is targeted to start by the end of 2025, to produce about 150,000 tons of renewable hydrogen per year from 2026 and reach 330,000 tons in 2030. ArcelorMittal and Grupo Fertiberia have announced their intention to contract, together with other key off-takers, the supply of 6.6 million tons of renewable hydrogen over 20 years.

Project’s objective is to deliver mass-scale competitive green hydrogen in a record time, which will contribute to positioning Spain and its industry as a key player in decarbonisation and green energy production, and making HyDeal España to reach green hydrogen cost leadership.

In this initial phase, Hydeal and TSK will jointly evaluate the proposals from different companies for the basic design, architecture and supply chain of the first HyDeal plants in Spain. They will presents their best proposals to comply with the challenging production and cost levels required by Hydeal.

After this basic design phase, HyDeal España will validate the final EPC companies responsible for conducting the Design Engineering Project (FEED) and subsequent project execution (EPC).

During the subsequent engineering and project execution phases, the selected EPC companies will work in close collaboration with TSK to complete the development and construction of HyDeal’s España renewable hydrogen production sites, which will form the largest integrated renewable and competitive hydrogen hub in Europe. They will collaborate with OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturer) across the supply chain, especially electrolyzer producers, with a view to securing GW-scale of competitive equipment supply and fostering Europe-based industry.

TSK will also participate in the execution of different parts of the project during the construction phase.

The project was born with the determination to accelerate the energy transition, relying on innovations that allow secure and competitive alternatives to fossil fuels at a critical time in the energy markets.

TSK’s hydrogen team is also dealing with other large-scale projects, and is already working on studies and supporting different promoters in Spain, Portugal, Egypt, Lithuania, Mexico, Morocco and Australia.
