EDP awards the construction of two emission reduction plants to TSK-Mitsubisi Hitachi partnership consortium

10 November, 2014

The Project will prolong the life of EDP’s coal power stations in Spain until 2035

EDP has decided to start the construction of DeNOx systems at Power Stations in Aboño –Unit 2- and in Soto de Ribera – Unit 3, both are located in Asturias, Spain. This project means a significant environmental improvement, because it reduces the emissions of NOx (nitrogen oxides) by 80%. The partner consortium, TSK an Asturian company and the Japanese company Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems, will be in charge of carrying out the works at both power units.

These systems, which are scheduled to go into operation in 2016 in Aboño 2 and 2017 in Soto 3, will enable both power stations to work until at least December 2035.  EDP will be the first company to put a DeNOx system into service in Spain.

DeNOx systems reduce the nitrogen oxide emissions present in the gases that originate from coal combustion in the boiler.  When the gases go into the system, a reagent is injected- ammonia diluted in water- over the nitrogen oxides. Both pass through a reactor and a chemical reaction is produced which generates water vapor and nitrogen. In this way, up to 80% of the emissions can be reduced.

Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems is a company that is recognized worldwide for its construction and operation of DeNOx systems, while TSK is a leading Asturian company with a strong international business presence from its head office in El Parque Científico y Tecnológico de Gijón.

Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems, Ltd. (MHPS), with headquarters in Yokohama, Japan, is a new company which was set up in January 2014 by the two Japanese  firms, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) and Hitachi, Ltd.  It incorporates the assets from both companies in the field of thermal energy generating systems and associated divisions.  MHPS is one of the world leaders in supplying equipment and services to the power generating industry.  The company’s products include combined-cycle power plants, integrated gasification combined-cycle plants, conventional thermal gas / coal / diesel plants, boilers, generators, gas and steam turbines, geothermal plants, etc.

Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems is the only SCR system provider that manufactures the catalyst on its premises.
